Break down your goals

Having goals is great, it gives you something to work towards, and gives you direction for your life.  But having a goal is pointless, if you don’t actually do something towards achieving it.

By breaking your goals down into mini goals and actionable tasks, you create a clear plan to actually achieve those goals.

It’s all well and good setting a goal of becoming a millionaire, but how do you actually make that happen?

  1.  Start by assessing where you currently are.  How far away are you from achieving this goal.  Do you need to start from the beginning, or have you already made some progress?  Having a clear understanding of your starting point is really important.
  2. Can you break your goal down into smaller mini-milestones.  I’d suggest working towards a mini-milestone every 12 weeks.  This gives you a good timeframe for achieving your long term goal, and will keep you focused when you start to lose motivation, or don’t seem to be making any progress.  For a lot of people a long term goal can feel too big, and slightly overwhelming.  By breaking it down into smaller milestones, you can work towards your big scary goal, without feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Next brainstorm a list of all the tasks you need to complete to achieve those mini-milestones.  These need to be tasks that you can actually achieve, and you’ll know that you’ve ticked them off.  For weight loss it might be going to step class and planning out your meals.  For making your millions it might be starting a business or asking for a promotion.   Make these tasks as small as possible to begin with, this will help you to gather momentum with easy to achieve actions and create small wins that will encourage you to keep going.
  4. Assess regularly.  Are your actions helping you reach those mini milestones?  Some things will work and others won’t.  By continually assessing your progress, you’ll be able to fine tune your actions to make huge progress towards your goals.

By following this simple 4 step process you’ll easily create an action plan that will make reaching your goals fun and achievable.
